The annual Pi Mu Epsilon Banquet
is scheduled for April 19, 2002. This year's speaker will be
Dr. Harold P. Boas, Editor, Notices of the American
Mathematical Society and Professor of Mathematics, Texas
A&M University. Dr. Boas' talk is entitled"The
Legacy of Archimedes''
Abstract: Renowned as the greatest scientist of
antiquity, Archimedes of Syracuse is best remembered today
for his fundamental contributions to mechanics and to
hydrostatics. This talk emphasizes the mathematics of
Archimedes by highlighting three of his geometrical
problems: namely, the tombstone, the birdcage, and the
shoemaker's knife.
